| Masculine or Feminine?Data collection of verb-derived nouns in SpanishThis is an ongoing project. The following data are by no means fully classified or analyzed. Let me give a brief explanation of what I am working on: In Spanish, there are many nouns which are identical to the past-participle form of the verb. For example, cuidado. Ten cuidado is an example of cuidado as a verb-derived noun. It is identical in spelling to ya van siete años que he cuidado a mi hermano menor. However, many, many nouns in this general group are formed with the FEMININE past-participle rather than the masculine past-participle. This perplexes and fascinates me. Why is it that 'to dive' is clavarse and 'a dive' is UN CLAVADO, and yet 'to shave' is afeitarse and 'a shave' is UNA AFEITADA. How is one to know whether to choose masc or fem???
